Handsome Husband and Frame Maker

One cannot overlook those who add so much richness to our lives, and one such person is my husband Rich! He is a miracle worker and does wonders for our home and Horton House Press. Along with building an etching press, I previously wrote about in my March 2022 Studio Insider, he also makes my signature frames.

Rich standing in front of a pair of beautiful wood frames he made to encase my artwork.

Rich uses poplar wood to make the frames and then we finish them naturally using only Minwax Paste Finishing Wax . After many other tries with spray painting and staining, it became apparent that we both liked the natural finish, not only for the beauty of the wood, which is neutral and goes with just about anything, but for simplicity of work — the finishing wax works smoothly, does not flake off, and easy to maintain.

Caring for the natural waxed finished frame, one may use a light cleaning solution or a little mineral spirits with a rag, wipe down, steel wool if desired, reapply some more finishing wax, and buff to a nice polish – no need to worry about marring up a colored surface. The beauty lasts forever.

Glazing – the benefits of acrylic sheets

I have been using Acrylite Premium Clear Framing Grade glazing sheets in leu of standard picture-frame glass, and I have come to really like them in many ways. They are of highest quality acrylic material that offers UV protection. They are light weight and safe with no need to worry about breakage. The one thing to keep in mind is that they can scratch (like any plastic or even glass for that matter), but they are easily restored with some wonderful compounds – Novus 1-Clean & Shine, Novus 2-Fine Scratch Remover, and Novus 3-Heavy Scratch Remover. Using the Acrylite glazing sheets have made my life so much easier when packing, hanging, and storing artwork. I am hooked!

Solar Plate Printmaking with Maureen in Penos Genil, Spain

I had some greeting cards made using giclée archival printing of a few favorite original solar plate prints from my artist book Quiet Song and the Solitary Sandpiper series. I completed the original solar plate prints at Pomegranate Studios, in Penos Genil, Spain with Master Printmaker Maureen Booth.

Morning, noon, and night, it seemed as though I was liken to a songbird nestled in her printmaking studio, situated under a beautiful lemon tree overlooking a valley with Penos Genil River below. My husband, Rich, accompanied us with his Flamenco style guitar.

Maureen and her husband Mike were the most wonderful and nurturing hosts. I came to find out she is the same age as my parents, and coincidently, my time spent with Maureen included Mother’s Day — she seemed even more so a mother to me — that is a Mother of Printmaking who I will always cherish. Early one morning, as I heard the birds sing, I wrote this poem Quiet Song:

Quiet Song

show me the morning

A shout before noon

show me the day

Birds of the shore

– whisper –

show me the night

Much love in sweet friendships ~
